Welcome to My Heart Goes Boom – Your Drumming Journey Starts Here
I was about twelve or thirteen when my parents surprised me with a second hand drum kit for Christmas. It was battered, it was borrowed time before something broke, and I loved it instantly. That moment lit something in me that’s never gone out. Over forty years later, I’m still the guy tapping on desks at work, drumming along in my head, driving my family up the wall with cutlery at the dinner table.
But here’s the part I don’t usually say out loud. As I got older and started playing in bands, I’d watch other drummers who were properly trained, technically streets ahead of me, and instead of feeling inspired, I felt small. Like I’d missed my window. Like everyone else had started earlier, learned properly, and I was just the self taught guy pretending to keep up.
I carried that feeling for years. And it’s exactly why My Heart Goes Boom exists.
If your kit’s already sitting in the corner gathering dust, or if you’re still deciding whether to buy the one in the music shop window that you often stop to admire, I built this for you.
Most of the people who find me are 40 and over. Life’s moved on, maybe the kids have grown and moved out, and there’s finally a bit of space to chase something just for you. But every resource out there seems to assume you’re seventeen, or that you’ve already got rhythm in your blood. That’s the exact gap I’m trying to close, proving it really is never too late, at whatever stage of life you’re starting from.
That said, this site has always been for beginners of any age. Whether you’re buying your first kit for your child, looking for honest gear advice on a budget, or picking up sticks for the first time yourself, you’re welcome here too.
I’m not a trained teacher, and I’m not claiming to be a great drummer. What I am is someone who’s lived every part of this – the excitement of a new kit, the frustration when it’s harder than it looks, and the self consciousness of feeling like you’re behind. That’s why my course, It’s Never Too Late For Drums, pairs proper structured lessons, delivered by a professional drum teacher, with something you won’t find anywhere else: a personal email from me after every single lesson. No pressure to reply. Just someone in your corner who actually gets it.
Everything on this site — the gear reviews, the beginner tips, the course itself, comes from genuine research, real trial and error, and a refusal to recommend anything I wouldn’t tell a friend to buy. I know how expensive and overwhelming this hobby can look from the outside, so I only put my name behind what’s actually worth your money and your time.
I’m not part of a team. There’s no faceless brand behind this, it’s just me, David, still finding new beats to get excited about after forty years, still convinced the best chapters aren’t all behind any of us.
If you’ve been telling yourself it’s too late, it isn’t. Take a look at It’s Never Too Late For Drums, or start with a free guide that’ll have you playing your first real beat in five minutes, no kit required.
Let’s make some noise.
— David
